Making Life Easier
Assistive technology can significantly enhance your child’s independence and comfort. Our experienced therapists offer Brisbane families practical guidance and support in exploring suitable assistive equipment, from adaptive utensils to specialised seating and mobility aids.
We also support Brisbane families with assessing and applying for more complex equipment, such as vehicle modifications or hoists, ensuring the best fit for your child’s unique needs.
Our approach to therapy
Therapy Through Play
Our approach to occupational therapy is all about learning through play. We know children learn best when they’re having fun, so we use play-based techniques in every session. Our Brisbane occupational therapists might incorporate games, toys, puzzles, or imaginative activities that keep your child engaged and motivated.
Whether they’re building a block tower, navigating an indoor obstacle course, or role-playing a pretend scenario, your child will be working on important developmental skills without even realising it – they’ll just know they’re having a good time!
Community visits
We understand how important it is for therapy to fit into your world, not just the clinic. That’s why our team is happy to provide community visits in Newmarket, Brisbane and Norman Park, Brisbane.
Our occupational therapists can meet your child in the environments where they live, learn, and play – whether that’s at your home, their childcare centre, kindergarten, or school. By seeing your child in their natural setting, we can address real-life challenges on the spot and suggest practical strategies that suit your daily routine.

Frequently asked questions
How do I pay for occupational therapy in Brisbane? Is funding available?
Privately paying and funded clients are warmly welcomed at BillyLids Therapy in Brisbane. Our occupational therapists all hold Medicare provider numbers, making it easy for Brisbane families to use Enhanced Primary Care Plans (EPC) or Chronic Disease Management Plans. Additionally, we support NDIS clients who are plan-managed or self-managed. Visit our Fees & Funding page for further details.
What is the process for starting occupational therapy at BillyLids Therapy Brisbane?
While each child’s journey can vary slightly, the process typically looks like this:
- Discovery Call – We’ll start with a complimentary 15-minute call to discuss your child’s specific needs, match them with the best therapist, and arrange consistent appointment times. Regular weekly or fortnightly visits are beneficial for most Brisbane families.
- Initial Parent/Carer Appointment – This first formal appointment is an in-depth discussion with you, the parent or carer, to understand your child’s development, review previous therapy experiences, and collaboratively set goals. This meeting can take place at our Brisbane clinic or via Zoom.
- Your Child’s First Appointment – The goal of this session is building rapport and helping your child feel comfortable. Through informal observations, we’ll gather insights to guide future sessions, making it enjoyable so your child looks forward to returning.
- Formal Assessment – Typically conducted across appointments 3 to 5, these structured sessions still emphasise fun and comfort, ensuring your child remains engaged and relaxed.
- Intervention Sessions – Beginning usually by the fifth session, our occupational therapy interventions directly support your child’s individual goals, covering physical skills, social interaction, and everyday activities. Though sessions are play-based, each activity is strategically designed for therapeutic benefit, guided by our experienced Brisbane occupational therapists.
Can I access both speech pathology and occupational therapy at BillyLids Therapy Brisbane?
Absolutely! Many Brisbane families choose our multidisciplinary approach. As healthcare professionals and parents ourselves, we understand the convenience of accessing multiple therapies under one roof. We’re happy to discuss your family’s unique needs during our initial discovery call.
Does my child need a diagnosis to access occupational therapy at BillyLids Therapy?
No – many of our Brisbane clients don’t have a formal diagnosis. Some families are in the process of receiving a diagnosis and need formal documentation, while others seek support for sensory, physical, or social challenges without an official diagnosis.
Do I need a referral for occupational therapy in Brisbane?
You don’t need a referral to visit our Brisbane occupational therapists if you’re privately paying or using NDIS funding. However, if your child qualifies for a Medicare rebate, a referral from your GP is required.
Can my child receive bulk-billed Occupational Therapy in Brisbane?
Your child may be eligible for an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, which provides access to up to five subsidised sessions per calendar year with allied health providers like Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists. Speak to your local Brisbane GP for eligibility and further guidance. For more details, see our informative blog post: Navigating Funding Options for Children’s Allied Health Services.
