How occupational therapy can help
Occupational therapy
Every child deserves to enjoy the simple joys of childhood, playing, learning, and growing, with confidence. Our team is here to support those experiences and make the tasks of daily life less frustrating for your little one. We tailor our approach to each child’s needs, keeping therapy fun and engaging along the way.
Our occupational therapists will design a program specifically for your child, focusing on what will help your family the most. This might mean improving certain skills, building strength or coordination, or finding creative strategies to overcome challenges. We’re all about helping your child participate more independently in the activities they love. Here are some of the areas we can work on:
-
Fine motor skills (hand and finger coordination)
-
Gross motor skills (balance and big body movements)
-
Sensory processing (handling different sounds, touches, and other sensations)
-
Emotional regulation (managing big feelings and behaviours)
-
Social interaction skills (interacting and communicating with other children)
-
Play skills (sharing, turn-taking, and imaginative play)
-
Feeding skills (eating, chewing, and trying new foods)
-
Self-care tasks (getting dressed, toileting, and other daily routines)
-
Visual motor skills (hand-eye coordination for tasks like drawing or catching)
-

Assistive Technology for Children
Making Life Easier
Sometimes a little extra equipment or assistive technology can make life easier and safer for your child (and for you). Our occupational therapists can help you explore these options if it’s something you’re interested in. Often, simple tools can have a big impact.
For more complex needs, we can guide you through finding and using specialised equipment as well. Whether your family is considering a car modification for safer travel, a hoist to assist with transfers, or bathing equipment to make bath time less stressful, we’re here to support you through the process.
Our experienced therapists will work with you to assess your child’s needs, arrange trials of equipment, and even assist with any necessary funding applications. The goal is to find the right tools that fit comfortably into your life and empower your child’s independence.
Our approach to therapy
Therapy Through Play
Play is at the heart of everything we do at BillyLids Therapy. We know children learn best when they’re having fun, so we turn each therapy session into a playful adventure. Our occupational therapists use engaging games, toys, stories, and creative activities that keep your child interested while they practice important skills. Often, kids are so busy playing that they don’t even realise how hard they’re working on new skills!
Every child is unique, so our therapists begin by getting to know your child’s strengths and the areas that are tricky for them. We then create a personalised therapy plan to target those needs through enjoyable play-based activities.
We work in your world
Community visits
We understand that children often make the best progress when they feel comfortable in their own surroundings. That’s why our team is happy to support your child not only at our Newmarket clinic, but also out in the community or at home.
Being part of the Newmarket community is important to us, and we love getting to collaborate with the people in your child’s world. We often team up with parents, teachers, and childcare staff to create more inclusive and supportive environments for your little one.

How can I pay for occupational therapy at BillyLids Therapy Newmarket? Is funding available?
We welcome both privately paying and funded clients at our Newmarket clinic. If your child is eligible for Medicare rebates through an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) or Chronic Disease Management Plan, all our occupational therapists hold provider numbers. We also work with children supported through the NDIS, including those who are plan-managed or self-managed.
To learn more about funding options and pricing, visit our Fees & Funding page or chat with us during your discovery call. What’s the process for starting occupational therapy at your Newmarket clinic?
We aim to make getting started simple and supportive. While every child’s journey is different, here’s what the typical process looks like at BillyLids Therapy Newmarket:
-
Discovery Call – Begin with a complimentary 15-minute phone chat where we’ll learn about your child, match them with the right therapist, and help schedule their first appointments.
-
Parent/Carer Initial Appointment – You’ll meet with your child’s therapist (either in person or over Zoom) to share insights, discuss goals, and go over any previous reports or therapy experiences.
-
Child’s First Visit – This first session is all about connection. We’ll focus on helping your child feel relaxed and excited to return, while observing their strengths and needs in a low-pressure setting.
-
Assessment Phase – Over the next few sessions, we’ll complete structured assessments to better understand your child’s current skills and challenges—all through playful and engaging activities.
-
Therapy Begins – With a tailored plan in place, we’ll start working toward your child’s goals. Each session looks like fun and play on the surface, but underneath it’s guided by purposeful therapy strategies built to support development in everyday life.

Can my child see both a speech pathologist and occupational therapist at BillyLids Newmarket?
Yes – many families choose to access multiple services with us. Our Newmarket clinic was created with collaboration in mind. We’ve brought speech therapists and occupational therapists together under one roof to make life easier for families navigating early childhood support. If you’d like to explore both services, just let us know during your discovery call.
Does my child need a diagnosis to access occupational therapy in Newmarket?
Many of the children we see don’t have a formal diagnosis. Some may be working toward one, while others just need extra help in areas like sensory processing, emotional regulation, motor development, or social skills. Whatever your child’s needs, we’re here to help—no diagnosis required.
Do I need a referral to book occupational therapy in Newmarket?
No referral is needed to see an occupational therapist at BillyLids Therapy if you’re paying privately or accessing services through the NDIS. However, if you’d like to claim Medicare rebates via an EPC or Chronic Disease Management Plan, you will need a referral from your GP. If you’re unsure what applies to you, we’re happy to walk you through it.
Can my child receive bulk-billed occupational therapy at BillyLids Therapy?
Your child may be eligible for Medicare-subsidised sessions under an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, which can provide up to five allied health visits per calendar year. These sessions aren’t bulk billed, but they are subsidised to reduce out-of-pocket costs. To access this support, speak with your GP who can assess your child’s eligibility and create the referral.
