How speech therapy can help
Speech Pathology
Every child deserves to be heard, but for some, expressing themselves can be a challenge. Our Norman Park speech pathologists help children build essential communication skills through tailored, supportive therapy. We work on key areas including:
-
Speech clarity & fluency – Improving articulation, voice control, fluency, and reducing stuttering.
-
Expressive language – Helping children use words, gestures, or pictures to express thoughts and needs.
-
Receptive language – Strengthening understanding of spoken language, instructions, and non-verbal cues like tone, facial expressions, and body language.
-
Multimodal communication – Introducing alternative methods like key word signing, picture boards, or AAC devices to support effective communication.
-
Early literacy skills – Building foundations for reading and writing, including phonics, vocabulary, and storytelling.
We celebrate every milestone—big or small—because each one brings your child closer to feeling confident, connected, and understood.

Everyone is welcome

Our approach to therapy
Play-based Therapy
Play-based therapy is at the heart of what we do at BillyLids. Our speech pathologists specialise in engaging children through play – using games, toys, books, and imaginative activities to help your child learn new words, improve their articulation, and understand different aspects of language. By making therapy fun, we keep kids motivated and encourage real-world communication skills without it ever feeling like “work” for them.
Our Norman Park speech therapists will start by assessing your child’s current abilities and communication level, then design a personalised program to support their growth. Depending on your child’s needs, this program might include introducing communication aids such as visual supports, sign language, picture cards or other forms of assisted communication. We believe in using evidence-based techniques, but delivering them in a kid-friendly way – so your child is progressing toward their goals while genuinely enjoying each session.
We work in your world
Community visits
It’s important for us to see your child in their own environment, which is why our speech pathologists love to get out of the clinic and into the Norman Park community. Your BillyLids therapist can visit you at home in Norman Park or conduct therapy sessions at local childcare centres, kindys, or schools in and around the area. This flexibility means we can provide support where your child feels most comfortable – whether that’s on the living room floor, at their kindy sandpit, or in a classroom alongside their peers.
We also love working with teachers and educators to support your billylid in their everyday spaces. By collaborating with local kindergartens and schools, we ensure consistency in your child’s support network. In fact, many of the resources and strategies we introduce – such as key word signing or visual schedules – often create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all children in those settings, not just those in our program. Our goal is to help your child thrive across all the places they live, learn, and play.

Frequently asked questions
How do I pay for speech therapy? Is there funding available?
Privately paying and funded clients are all welcome at BillyLids Therapy. We accept a variety of payment methods and support options. Our speech pathologists have Medicare provider numbers, and we provide therapy for children on NDIS plans as well. You may also be able to claim sessions through your private health insurance (check with your insurer if you have Extras cover for speech therapy). See our Fees & Funding page for more information on rebates and funding options available to you.
Does my child need to have a diagnosis to see a speech pathologist?
No. Your child does not need a formal diagnosis to access our services. In fact, many of our clients don’t have a diagnosed condition – some are in the process of seeking a diagnosis and need therapy and professional reports as part of that journey, while others might just be experiencing some developmental delays or speech difficulties that you want to address early. Whatever the case, we welcome you. We focus on the child, not the label, and we’re here to provide support regardless of whether a formal diagnosis has been made.
Do I need a referral to see a speech pathologist?
No referral is needed to see a speech pathologist at BillyLids Therapy – you can simply contact us and make an appointment. However, if you plan to claim sessions under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan (also known as an EPC plan), you will need a referral from your GP for that. Similarly, if your child is using an NDIS plan for therapy, you’ll want to ensure speech pathology is included in their plan funding. But to come and see us at Norman Park, you don’t need any paperwork or referrals upfront – you can just book a discovery call to get started
