How Occupational Therapy Can Help
Occupational therapy
Growing up is full of learning, play, and discovery — but sometimes kids need a little extra help along the way. That’s where we come in. Our occupational therapy sessions are personalised to suit your child’s needs and designed to make daily routines feel more manageable.
We use play-based, engaging activities that make learning fun and meaningful. Depending on your child’s goals, therapy might focus on:
-
Big movements like running, jumping, and climbing (gross motor skills)
-
Hand control for drawing, cutting, or using utensils (fine motor skills)
-
Self-care habits such as dressing, toileting, and eating
-
Emotional skills like staying calm and managing feelings
-
Social development—sharing, turn-taking, and teamwork
-
Coping with sensory input like loud sounds or certain textures
-
Imaginative play and learning how to play with others
-
Hand-eye coordination and visual tracking
No matter the need, our therapists aim to make everyday tasks feel easier — and a lot more fun.

All Families Welcome
Who we work with
At BillyLids Therapy Nerang, we support children from all backgrounds — whether they have a diagnosis, are waiting for one, or just need help in certain areas of development.
We often work with children who experience:
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 1, 2, or 3)
-
ADHD
-
Global Developmental Delay
-
Down syndrome
-
Cerebral palsy
-
Learning differences (like dyslexia)
-
Anxiety or emotional struggles
-
School readiness difficulties
But a diagnosis isn’t needed. If your child is having trouble with focus, coordination, behaviour, or life skills, we’re here to help. Everyone is welcome at BillyLids.

Support Through Assistive Technology
Making Life Easier
A small tool can make a big difference. Assistive technology can help children take part more fully in daily life — like using special utensils at mealtimes, adaptive clothes for easier dressing, or portable ramps for access at home or school.
Our therapists can help you explore simple, low-risk tools and try them out with your child. If more advanced equipment is needed — such as hoists, vehicle modifications, or custom bathing aids — we’re here to guide you through assessments, trials, and funding steps.
We’ll make sure everything suits your child’s needs and fits smoothly into your daily routine.
Book a callOur approach to therapy
Learning Through Play
Therapy at BillyLids is anything but boring. We use play as the main tool for learning — because kids learn best when they’re having fun. From obstacle courses to storytime and games, sessions are packed with purposeful activities designed to build real-life skills.
Every therapy plan is shaped around your child’s interests and developmental goals. After an in-depth assessment, we focus on the areas that will have the biggest impact — like emotional regulation, physical coordination, sensory processing, or communication.
Our therapists specialise in paediatric care and know how to mix proven strategies with child-led play, helping kids make progress in a natural, enjoyable way.
Therapy That Fits Into Everyday Life
Community visits
Some of the best progress happens outside the clinic. That’s why our therapists can also visit your home, school, daycare, or kindy—anywhere your child spends time.
We work across Nerang and the surrounding Gold Coast suburbs, supporting children in familiar environments. These visits help us understand your child’s needs in real-world settings and work closely with educators and caregivers to make sure support is consistent across all areas of life.
Whether we’re in your home, your child’s classroom, or our Station Street clinic, our mission stays the same: helping your child grow, succeed, and enjoy the journey.

Frequently asked questions
How Can I Pay for Occupational Therapy in Nerang?
At BillyLids Therapy, we serve both private-paying and funded clients in Nerang and the surrounding areas. Our occupational therapists are registered with Medicare, enabling us to offer therapy through Enhanced Primary Care Plans (EPC) or Chronic Disease Management Plans. Additionally, we provide services for NDIS participants who are plan-managed or self-managed. For more information about funding options and our fees, please visit our Fees & Funding page.
What Is the Process for Starting Paediatric Occupational Therapy?
While each child’s journey is unique, we generally follow this process to begin therapy at BillyLids Therapy:
-
Discovery Call: First, we’ll set up a complimentary 15-minute discovery call to discuss your child’s needs, match them with the right therapist, and schedule sessions. Most children thrive with a consistent routine, so we recommend weekly or fortnightly appointments.
-
Initial Parent/Carer Appointment: In the first formal appointment, you (the parent or carer) will meet with your child’s therapist. This session allows us to talk about your child’s development, review any previous therapies, and set meaningful goals together. You can choose to meet us in our Nerang clinic or have the appointment via Zoom.
-
Child’s First Appointment: The main focus during your child’s first appointment is to build rapport and make them feel comfortable in the clinic. We’ll engage with your child and conduct informal assessments to guide the next steps in their therapy. The aim is to ensure they enjoy their time with us and look forward to the next visit.
-
Formal Assessment: For appointments 3 to 5, we carry out formal assessments. These sessions are structured but still designed to be fun for your child, ensuring they feel relaxed while we collect the information needed for their therapy plan.
-
Therapeutic Intervention: From session 5 onward, we begin implementing targeted interventions to help your child reach their goals. Whether it’s working on physical skills, social interactions, or mastering everyday tasks, each session is carefully planned to support your child’s development, all while keeping it fun and engaging. Our paediatric occupational therapists are dedicated to finding creative ways for your child to learn through play.
-
Can My Child See a Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist?
Definitely! Many families in Nerang choose to access both speech pathology and occupational therapy services at BillyLids Therapy. Our multidisciplinary clinic is specifically designed for children, offering a convenient option for families to access multiple therapies in one location. During your discovery call, we’ll discuss your child’s needs and help guide you toward the right therapy approach.
Does My Child Need a Diagnosis to See an Occupational Therapist?
No, a formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy at BillyLids Therapy. Many children we work with do not have a diagnosis but still benefit from support with sensory, social, or physical challenges. Whether your child is working towards a diagnosis or simply needs additional support, we are here to help.
Do I Need a Referral to See an Occupational Therapist in Nerang?
A referral is not required to see an occupational therapist at BillyLids Therapy, except if your child is eligible for a Medicare rebate. In that case, you will need a referral from your GP. If you’re privately paying or using NDIS funding, no referral is necessary. Just keep in mind that a referral from your GP is needed to access Medicare rebates.
Can My Child Receive Bulk-Billed Occupational Therapy in Nerang?
Your child may be eligible for the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, which provides access to up to five subsidised visits with allied health professionals, including occupational therapists and speech pathologists, each calendar year. To check if your child qualifies, please speak to your GP for an assessment.
