How speech therapy can help
Speech Pathology
Every voice deserves to be heard. Our speech therapy services in Newmarket are designed to support children in overcoming communication challenges and learning new skills. We focus on a range of areas, including:
- Speech sound development: Helping kids with pronunciation and clarity (for issues like articulation delays or stuttering) so they can speak clearly and confidently.
- Understanding and using language: Building receptive language (understanding words and instructions) and expressive language (using words, sentences, or signs to express themselves) for more effective communication.
- Social communication skills: Guiding children in social skills like making eye contact, taking turns in conversation, and understanding social cues, so they can connect with friends and family.
- Alternative communication methods: Introducing gestures, key word signing, or AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) tools for children who need support beyond verbal speech, ensuring every child can communicate their needs.
- Early literacy and listening skills: Supporting pre-reading and listening skills, such as understanding stories, improving vocabulary, and phonological awareness, which are foundational for later reading and academic success.
- Speech sound development: Helping kids with pronunciation and clarity (for issues like articulation delays or stuttering) so they can speak clearly and confidently.
Every child is welcome
Who we work with
We are a paediatric speech pathology clinic exclusively for children under 10, and we welcome kids of all abilities and backgrounds. You do not need a referral or a diagnosis to come to BillyLids – if you have any concern about your child’s communication, we’re here for you.
We often work with children who have:
- Developmental delays in speech or language (late talkers or children who aren’t meeting communication milestones)
- Diagnosed conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or global developmental delay that can affect speech and language
- Speech sound disorders (difficulty with pronunciation or childhood apraxia of speech)
- Stuttering or fluency difficulties
- Social communication difficulties, anxiety related to speaking, or other challenges that make it hard for them to communicate and connect
Many of our families are also simply seeking early intervention or extra support for their child’s speech – no formal diagnosis required. Every child is unique, and our Newmarket speech pathologists for kids are experienced in adjusting to each child’s needs.

Our approach to therapy
Play-based Therapy
At BillyLids Newmarket, we believe play is powerful. Our approach to speech therapy is play-based and evidence-based, meaning your child will be learning while having fun. In each session, our therapists engage your child with games, toys, stories, and creative activities that keep them interested and motivated. Behind the fun, we use proven therapeutic techniques tailored to your child’s specific goals – this might look like a silly game, but there’s a well-planned strategy at work to improve their speech and language skills.
Therapy in Your Child’s World
Community Visits
It’s important to see your child in their own environment, which is why our speech pathologists love getting out and about in the Newmarket area. Whether you’re based at home or your child attends a local childcare centre, kindy, or school in Newmarket or surrounding suburbs, we can come to you.
Our therapists enjoy working closely with educators and teachers across Newmarket to support your little one in their familiar setting. We’ve found that many of the tools we use in educational settings—like key word signing—not only support the child we’re working with, but also help create a more inclusive, welcoming environment for all students.

What is the process to start at BillyLids Therapy?
While it can differ from child to child, our process generally looks like this:
1. A discovery call. We’ll arrange a 15 minute complimentary discovery call to discuss your child’s needs, match them with the right therapist and book in your appointment times. Most of the children we see benefit from routine, and visit us at the same time each week or each fortnight.
2. Parent/carer initial appointment. The first formal appointment will be between you, the parent or carer, and your child’s therapist. This is an opportunity to discuss your child’s needs in detail, review their development, reflect on any previous therapy and to set goals together. You’re welcome to visit us at the clinic or we can meet over Zoom.
3. Your child’s initial appointment. Our first appointment is all about building rapport and making your child feel comfortable in the clinic. We’ll observe and make non-formal assessments to guide our next appointments. The main goal here is for them to have fun with us and look forward to their next appointment!
4. Formal assessment. During appointments 3 to 5, we typically make our formal assessments. While there’s structure to these appointments, we still focus on making them fun for your child.
5. Intervention. Generally from appointment 5, we start our language interventions. While it sometimes looks like it’s all play, there’s always a well-planned therapeutic goal at the heart of everything we do. Our speech pathologists are experienced working with kids, so they’re constantly mixing it up, finding new ways to play and keeping them engaged.
